Taman Margasatwa Ragunan, better known as Ragunan Zoo, is one of South Jakarta's most affordable family outings. Set on a large green site in Ragunan, Pasar Minggu, it sits some distance south of the city centre but rewards the trip with shady grounds and a wide range of animals.
Entry costs very little. The zoo's official ticket page lists admission at IDR 4,000 for adults and IDR 3,000 for children, with parking priced by vehicle, from IDR 3,000 for a motorcycle to IDR 6,000 for a sedan. Payment is handled with the JakCard electronic card, which can be bought and topped up at the park's counters.
Beyond the main enclosures, several facilities carry small additional fees. The official list includes a children's zoo at IDR 2,500, a zoo train ride at IDR 10,000, single-bike hire at IDR 10,000 and a swan boat at IDR 15,000, giving families flexible ways to fill a day.
One highlight is the Schmutzer Primate Center, a dedicated primate facility within the zoo. According to the official pricing, entry is IDR 6,000 on weekdays and IDR 7,500 on weekends and national holidays for visitors aged three and over.
Timing matters, because the zoo is closed every Monday. A visitor guide from Ashley Hotel Group notes opening from Tuesday to Friday between 07:00 and 16:00, with earlier weekend opening around 06:00, so an early start helps beat both the heat and the crowds.
The same JakCard used for entry is handy beyond the gates too. The official information notes it can be used on TransJakarta and at other city attractions such as the National Monument and the Old Town museums, which makes it convenient for stringing together a wider day out across Jakarta.
With its low prices, large grounds and primate centre, Ragunan makes for an easy, low-cost day out for families and animal lovers. It sits well to the south of central Jakarta, so allowing time for the journey, and for the midday heat, is part of planning a comfortable visit.
