How we reported this

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, or TMII, has long been a cultural showcase in East Jakarta, gathering traditional houses, museums and pavilions from across the archipelago. It introduced generations of visitors to Indonesia's ethnic and regional diversity in one place.
The park looks noticeably different after a major revitalisation. Management passed to the state, and a redevelopment followed. The refreshed park was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo.
A central goal of the work was to bring back green space, restoring open, planted areas. Private fossil-fuel vehicles are no longer allowed to circulate inside; instead, visitors move around using electric transport provided within the grounds, which makes for cleaner air and a calmer atmosphere along the walkways.
The experience now includes a modernised fauna and wildlife area, a set of museums and knowledge attractions, and modern recreation options, alongside the enduring cultural pavilions that represent Indonesia's regions. The regional pavilions and traditional houses remain the heart of the park, laid out so visitors can move from one part of the archipelago to another on foot and take in distinct architectural styles side by side.
Some long-standing icons remain. The Keong Emas IMAX theatre continues to screen large-format documentaries, while a newer evening highlight, the Tirta Cerita dancing fountain, combines water, a drone light show and Indonesian storytelling and is typically staged in the evening. Ticketing has moved to a cashless system.
Access has improved alongside the makeover. The Jabodebek LRT is a public-transport option for reaching the East Jakarta site, in keeping with the greener, more pedestrian-friendly layout, so visitors no longer have to rely on driving into the grounds.
For visitors who last came years ago, TMII will feel substantially changed: greener, more pedestrian-friendly and easier to reach by public transport. As with any large attraction, hours, prices and show times can be updated, so confirming the latest information before a visit is recommended.
